Dana’s work is similar to montage film editing, building meaning through subjective layering of images. From wisps of memory and fragments of life she creates a dense holistic space that reveals the simultaneity of one’s inner and outer consciousness.

At the edge of this ugly, gray, most magnificent city, again the bread falls with the buttered sided down. Angry husband/angry dog, the Universal Black Madonna, a lovely friend dying slowly of drink; Kacka’s horse is lame, mother is on the telephone, the basement floods, the computer crashes, say a prayer for the beloved white rat (not mouse). One joking, screaming woman ties it all together. The “stolen souls that catch on my line” are added like the chains around her neck. They are lost window reflections and glimpses at a journal left open to a certain page. You and I are invited to sift through the layers, hours, confrontations, and memories of her-my-your grandfather. D.Z. shows you almost everything.

In 1982 Jaroslava and I were working as artists in residence at the now famous Pilchuck Glass School. We showed the students examples of work by Czechoslovak glass artists. Dana Zamecnikova's pieces greatly resonated with teachers and staff at the school for their completely new spatial visual order. The following year she taught her own course at the school to students from all around the world. V dnes již proslulé škole Pilchuck veb státě Washington,jsme s Jaroslavou v roce 1982 pracovali v residenci. Studentům jsme promítali výsledky československých sklářských výtvarníků. Práce Dany Zámečníkové u učitelů a pracovníků školy způsobily mimořádný ohlas pro zcela nový prostorový výtvarný řád,druhý rok vedla již v této škole svůj obor se studenty z celého nsvěta. Práce Dany si vážím nejen pro její učitelský dar,ale pro její významný umělecký přínos.

Poprve jsem se seznamil s Danou a jejim muzem Marianem, kdyz byla vybrana jako jedna z jedenacti vytvarniku, kteri pracovali na sklenenych skulpturach pro nove sidlo nasi spolecnosti Corning Incorporated v Corningu ve state New York. Jeji uzasna sklenena a multimedialni instalace, Theatrum Mundi, je umistena na velmi viditelnem miste v jednom z nasich atrii. Maisie, moje zena, a ja jsme navstivili Danu a Mariana v Praze a tam jsme meli moznost videt dalsi z jejich mimoradnych del. Dana pracuje se sklem ve velkem i v malem meritku originalne, a ve svych pribezich vyvazuje kazdodenni zivot se svetem fantazie. Vazime si nejen osobniho pratelstvi s ni, ale take toho, ze jsme vlastniky jednoho z jejich del. Dana je jednou z vudcich osobnosti a skutecnou prukopnici v oboru mezinarodniho atelieroveho skla.

Am I the consciousness or am I the vehicle of consciousness? In Japan, these two alternatives are called the ri hokkai (the general realm) and the ge hokkai (the individual realm). The Japanese say: ge, ri, mu gai (individual, general, no obstruction). When you identify with the consciousness then you can let the vehicle go. You have identified yourself with that which is everlasting. You realize that you are one with the consciousness in all beings.
“My inspiration is almost always the same,” observes Dana Zámečníková. “It is what I know well: friends, relationships, relationships between men and women. My personal ones and the general ones, those of the present, and the past.” Relationships – individual and general – are the focus of Dana’s elaborate constructions of plate glass, paint, pastel, and pencil. Figures of men, women, animals – and combinations thereof – dance, prance, hang, and otherwise float in spatially-rearranged, light-filled spaces of glass. A human shadow glides past, interrupted by a solid table leg that juts between dimensions like the sound of an alarm clock interrupting a vivid dream. Dana’s environments, redolent of the unconscious, act as numinous stages on which thoughts, feelings, and emotions are projected and received. We may not know exactly what activity is taking place there, but we recognize it, responding to cues of posture and gesture. In Dana’s worlds, even petty interactions reveal truths about the nature of human experience. Individual, general, no obstruction.

Moje inspirace je téměř vždycky stejná,” poznamenává Dana Zámečníková. “Je z toho co dobře znám: přátele, vztahy, vztahy mezi muži a ženami. Moje vlastní a obecné, současné a minulé.” Vztahy – osobní i obecné– jsou jádrem Daniných komplexních konstrukcí z tabulového skla, barvy, [a kresby] pastelem a tužkou. Postavy mužů, žen, zvířat - a jejich kombinace – tančí, predvádějí se, visí a všelijak se vznáší v prostorově posunutých a světlem naplněných prostorech skla. Kolem proplouvá lidský stín proplouvá a v tom ho přeruší noha od stolu, která prochazí několika rozměry jako zvuk budíku, který přehlusi živý sen. Prostředí, která Dana vytváří, připomínají podvědomí, jsou to mysteriozní jeviště, která zároveň přijímají a na nichž se promítají myšlenky, pocity a emoce. Nevíme přesně jaká skutečnost se na nich odehrává, ale poznáváme ji z nápovědy, kterou nám skytajíi postavy a gesta. I ty nejobyčejnejší střety odhalují v Daniných světech pravdu o podstatě lidské zkušenosti. [Je] individualní , obecná, bez překážek. Tina Oldknow
